Brief Bio: I'm 48 and married with two children. Professionally, I'm a senior IS manager for a Fortune 500 multinational in the high-tech industry. I've been a car fanatic since my teenage years (mostly Fords) and currently own two Mustangs, this '65 convertible and a '69 convertible that is just beginning restoration.
Article:
This member of our Mustang stable is my wife's dream car. For the 20 years plus we have been married, this is the car she has always said she would like to have. So, in July 2000, I bought it for her as a 20th Anniversary gift. However, it did not look like these pictures.
The important part was that it was a solid, mostly original convertible with no significant rust. I had the opportunity to spend about 4 hours driving it prior to the purchase and knew that it ran well. Since I was also driving it at times in pouring rain, I also knew that the cowl didn't leak. Further inspection proved the car to be as solid as it seemed.
This Mustang was sold in Massachusetts and has lived here all its life. The only known changes made by prior owners were that the color was changed to Tahoe Turquoise, the original 3-speed manual transmission was replaced by a 4-speed manual from a Galaxie, and a Rally-Pac, 1968 GT wheels, and a GT light bar were added. It came originally with a black pony interior and the power top. The restoration we planned was to literally make this Mustang conform to my wife's specifications for color, etc. She ultimately selected Silver Blue as the exterior color choice and the blue/white Pony Interior combination highlighted by a white convertible top. The restoration was completed in 6 weeks, making this gorgeous pony ready to hit the trails just in time for summer. Since the resto included a complete rebuild of the 289, a new clutch, new rear springs, and new shocks at all four corners, this car truly drives as if it were new.
