  1. Dumb question about Door VIN plate

    Vintage Mustang Forum
Nope. The tag on the door is a "Warranty Tag", intended only for dealer service information. Says so right on the tag. I always wondered why so often government officials can't read.
  2. Best Rear Brake Kit w/Parking Brake Option

    Vintage Mustang Forum
An excellent point. The big Shelby rear brakes were borrowed from the 390 Fairlane station wagon, and worked very well.
  3. Folds in sheet metal from the factory?

    Vintage Mustang Forum
I've seen worse, on untouched cars.
  4. 1965 289 4 speed in need of brake upgrade

    Vintage Mustang Forum
I agree. When I was working in the Mustang parts biz, got a lot of calls from people asking about disc brake conversion. My first question was always "What sort of driving do you do?" If it was a leisure car, cruise night at Dairy Queen fun car, I'd turn them to dual master power boost...
  5. Generator switch to alternator--What's involved?

    Vintage Mustang Forum
I recently took an open-cab vehicle to an event in the Poconos. Since it's 6V generator powered, I figured early morning might be a problem. Got up 6 am, 23°F, had to brush frost off the driver seat. Started immediately on the first try. Same thing the next day. So, why would I consider 12V...
  6. Heater House Routing

    Vintage Mustang Forum
    Intake side.
  7. 66 Stereo Ideas

    Vintage Mustang Forum
Yes, that's most likely. Was a time when Autosound was the only game in town, but they had something like 15% failure rate. For a business, that's a real pain. The Barn basically dropped them when Retrosound came up. I'll be using one of theirs in an old roadster kit car I'm working on. You can...
  8. Heater House Routing

    Vintage Mustang Forum
And now for the official FoMoCo routing. On the 289HP, the hose simply lays on the top of the valve cover, then is suspended from a rubber strap (tire carcass) hanging from the RH tower brace. (oddly, the 6 cylinder Mustang also should have this rubber strap). Note the ties. They are not nylon...
  9. Upper control arms??

    Vintage Mustang Forum
I'm confused. If you're going to modify them, why do you care if the they are the 3-bolt or 4-bolt? Ford switched to the 3-bolt type in 1970. These were used on all sorts of Ford cars, Mustang, Falcon, Fairlane, Cougar, Maverick, Granada… That's why the 3-bolt is so cheap. They were made by the...
  10. 1964 1/2 door switch pad

    Vintage Mustang Forum
The switches in the above photos are incorrect. The OEM "64" switch had a steel retaining collar, not the nylon shown. Might be significant. Early switches had a more rounded tip than this, but otherwise correct. For 65-67, it's spot on.
  11. Correct Z-bar for my 289

    Vintage Mustang Forum
The engine-mounted pivot was unique to the 289HP. The hex portion ends up inside the tube, unlike the standard equalizer. This allows the lower arm to tuck very close to the engine block to clear the exhaust pipe, which goes below the tube rather than above as on the standard exhaust. The pivot...
  12. Cooling properly?

    Vintage Mustang Forum
I suspect so. I learned that trick from my Grandad, who was an auto mechanic from 1920-1955.
  13. Cooling properly?

    Vintage Mustang Forum
Make sure you get the Motorcraft 190° with the tiny check valve at the top. If you can't, drill a 1/16" hole in the upper part of the flange. This will allow air to escape from the system when you fill it.
  14. No exhaust manifold gasket on FE motor?

    Vintage Mustang Forum
You are correct, that's a heat shield, protecting the spark plug boots. Exhaust manifolds typically had no gasket from the factory. I'm not aware of any Ford (or Chevy, for that matter) that had a gasket from the factory.
  15. Mustang Monthly GONE (in print)

    Vintage Mustang Forum
I doubt it will continue long as an electronic pub. Their morgue is lousy. Try looking up past MM articles online. The writeups are still there, but the images are gone. Makes them kinda useless.
