A tach on a timing light? Wow,thats a new one on me... As far as idle speed, I always set mine first with a vacuum gauge
A bit pricey, but I really like it: INNOVA 3568 Digital Timing Light : Amazon.com : Automotive

My ear says the tach is accurate.

Nice features include a button that turns off the strobe light, while the tach stays active.

I also use a vacuum gauge to adjust the carb:

Some folks adjust timing by ear.

Or you can do it with a vacuum gauge (skip to ~8:30):

Shown is an Actron CP7803 Vacuum Tester. You might be able to borrow one for free from Autozone.

Then take an uphill test drive. Pre-ignition is a bad thing, so make sure the engine doesn't knock.

BTW, I'm assuming you properly installed the distributor -- though I'm not sure how, since you can't identify Top Dead Center without a timing mark.

That is, if your distributor is installed off just one tooth (or more), you'll never get the engine to run right.

      HI guys

I have a fuel vacuum test kit/. I wanted to test my Fuel pressure But I occurred that I would damage the gauge if I ran a liquid thru it? is it just that simple to place the gauge at the end of your fuel line into the carburetor . Then crank the engine a few seconds to get a reading?
