I realize this thread is a hundred years old but some new stuff and ideas have come out since then.

Assuming the shortblock is healthy and stays stock, I would do a 289 one of two ways.

      More power:
Heads: Trick Flow® Twisted Wedge® 11R 170 Cylinder Heads for Small Block Ford TFS-52515301-C00
Cam: Trick Flow® Track Max® Hydraulic Roller Camshafts for Ford 5.0L TFS-51403001
Lifters: Howards Cams Street Series Retrofit Hydraulic Roller Lifters 91168
Rocker Arms: COMP Cams Ultra Pro Magnum Rocker Arms 1632-16
Intake: Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap Intake Manifolds 7521
Carb (Auto): Quick Fuel Brawler Street Series Carburetors BR-67206
Carb (Manual): Quick Fuel Brawler Street Series Carburetors BR-67211
Headers: 1965 FORD MUSTANG JBA Headers Competition-Ready Headers 6610S

      Less power:
Heads: Home ported stock with screw in studs added
Cam: Stock 5.0 H.O. Cam or maybe Ford E-Cam
Lifters: Howards Cams Street Series Retrofit Hydraulic Roller Lifters 91168
Rocker Arms: COMP Cams Ultra Pro Magnum Rocker Arms 1630-16
Intake: Weiand Street Warrior intake Manifolds 8124WND
      Carb: Summit Racing® M2008 Series Carburetors SUM-M08500VS
      Headers: Reproduction K-Code Manifolds

      That's just my opinion.

Hey Kenash, That helps a lot.

In reference to the guide plates specifically, I know you can buy adjustable ones but would other ones from comp or manley all be a stock center to center? Sorry the heads are apart right now and i cant really check for alignment right now.

I am thinking of going with these rockers, any reason why these would not be recommended? Comp cams high energy die-cast full roller rockers

      Other 2 options is:
Miller rockers - 224$+shipping on ebay.
      Jim Miller, PVS PA Series

and if i need to bite the bullet:
comp cams pro magnum - i like the idea that these are completely rebuild-able.
      http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/cca-1632-16/overview/make/ford

I know i dont need to go this far with the build and that money adds up but if i have to get into this,i would rather overkill. I just dont want to buy incompatible parts.

Also pros and cons with going with 7/16" studs? it doesnt seem to be extra cost.

      Thanks for the help.

      Thanks tooponies,

These seem to be the new updated ones:

I talk to another tech guy and he confirms that they will work and have the smallest profile due to the fact that they are chromoly construction. He also said that they are fully rebuild able for 8.84$ per valve or if the body gets damaged/cracks its covered in their full warranty program.

Appreciate the help. They are stud mounted and currently have 7/16 installed though the 3/8 are included. AFR recommends 7/16. Attempting to limit choices on Summit and came across these: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-17044-16/overview/make/ford There are some that are double the price but I'm sure I don't need that type of quality. Though I think it may partially be because these are cast not billet cut. Is that something I should care about for my type of application?
I had a set of those, I was not impressed. The trunions developed a good amount of wear rather quickly. Rocker arms are not something you want to cheap out on, if one breaks you now get to clean up needles bearings from the inside of your engine.

I went with the ultra pro magnum rockers by comp:

Overkill? That's debatable, but I can say that these rocker arms have never given me an issue after 35,000 hard miles. I've also heard good things about the Scorpion rocker arms, although I've never used them.

That's depressing. Thanks for the feedback.

You might want to call AFR to discuss your combination.

I have scorpion 1.72 rollers with afr 165 and custom cam - but this combination puts out over .600 lift .

With less lift you may be ok with stock rockers.
I did shoot them a message today. Hopefully, they'll respond tomorrow.

I haven't heard back from Comp Cams or AFR yet but I'm leaning towards one of these rockers https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-19044-16/overview/make/ford or https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-1632-16/overview/make/ford. I guess I've come to the conclusion I don't want anything to go wrong and to just spend the money. And with that, I'm thinking to get the more expensive of these two choices. I don't think I can really go wrong with either, but at this point what is $40? I'll never push the engine to what these rockers are designed for but at least they should last for the time I have the car.

The spring pressures needed with your cam are no where near excessive for just about any rocker . . . . .

I was very happy with the last choice on your list: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-1632-16/overview/make/ford (this one needs 7/16" studs.)

(The price has certainly gone up in the last few years.)

Even had a warranty claim after a roller lifter gave out during racing and that led to lots of block damage. One rocker was obviously trashed so I sent the whole set back to Comp for inspection. They cleaned them up, found no additional damage, and replaced the damaged rocker with an all new one in comp original packaging. Needless to say I was pleased that they took care of me . . . . I continued to race the set until I sold the heads--they were still like new. I run shaft rockers now but would certainly consider another set down the road.

What ever you decide, stick with a steel type rocker for long term longevity . . . .
