Harbor Freight's got a cheap timing light for $30. Or $24 with their 20% off coupons you find everywhere.

Plus you can read the instructions beforehand so you'll already know how to use it before you pick it up.

Since it's another Pertronix thread let's make sure we've covered everything. Failures, points in the glovebox, points rule, worked for me on the pink wire, I see MSD thrown in here. Good, good. I guess the only thing else to add is if you want an electronic ignition you should look at a 70's Ford Duraspark II system. There. I think that should cover everything for any Pertronix thead. I'm sure someone else will jump in if I've missed a point.
Seriously though I ran the Pertronix II for years on the pink wire with no problems. I'd still be running it but I have a 6 cylinder and wanted to add mechanical advance instead of just the vacuum the I6 uses so I switched to the Duraspark.
The Pertronix work for some people, and some people have really bad luck with them, but the same can be said for everything. My dad thinks I'm nuts for adding the Duraspark because he had them fail repeatedly in the 70s when they were new, but so far it's working great for me.
Whatever you do it's still worth it to spend the $24 on the timing light. You're going to need it eventually.
