1142 Bulbs - whats the deal

1249 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Scott302
After fabricating a functioning back-up light switch, hunting through a junk yard for the harness and getting it all hooked up and working, I can't get the correct bulbs for a 69!! They are 1142's, none of the local PEP Boys, Autozone or Hi-Lo's stock them at all, what is the deal, they have at least 20 other types? Anyway, until I find somewhere that realizes 1969 Mustangs still exist and have back-up lights the map lights (1004) also work in their place, though not as bright I imagine.

That's funny I just got some at NAPA.... maybe you just need a similar light that's a different number?

I have to admit I didn't try NAPA after my third strike, there is a NAPA not to far from home, I'll try them out. The Haynes book I have also listed a 1156 as a brighter alternative to the 1142, the stores had these but they couldn't work due to the connector type - 1 pin rather than two.

I concur with Bozo, I mean Bishir. I have had better luck with Napa. also, an auto-electric store will have the parts

I've always shown 69-73's used 1156's for the backup. 65-68's used 1142's. Am I missing something?

I think the 67-70 all use the same backup lamp housing only the lenses are different, but with the same housing they would use the same lamp. The 71-73 must be different.

If all else fails, try NPD 1-800-521-6104 they stock 'em.

I think Scott has this one.

Look in any Mustang parts vendor catalog. Most have a bulb chart.

My 67 takes 1142s in the backups.

FYI:

1142s and 1157s are NOT interchangeable...

The BU lamp housings are different for 67-68 and 69-70. They are very similar and I have seen 69-70's using 67-68's in the past. The design change included the change in bulbs to 1156's.
