::Is there a difference between the starters for
a manual and an automatic? The only info I can get is for
a 200c.i.d. I called a couple of vendors and they say it
is the same until the 200 came out. Thanks, bob

The 3-bolt starter for the manual is the same from 1960-65 between 144,170,200. The C4 starter from the early 60's to mid's 70's sometime is the same 3-bolt (not sure about the Ford-o-matic though). In 66, the manual starters went to 2-bolt, those are the same on the manual cars through the late 70's.

2 starters
Small diameter 3.5" industry standard #3128
Large diameter industry standard #3131
Some cannot accept the larger bodied starter
The 3l31 is also found on most big blocks

I will second that...there are two different
starters, the early ones are smaller. I found
out the hard way. If you need a small style
3 bolt nose for one let me know, I have one.
