Is there a procedure to adjust the valves that doesn't require the tool(which I don't have) to collapse the lifter. The engine has adjustable rockers. Thanks in advance. Al

You can do this with the motor running. After the motor has reached operating temp, remove the valve cover. With the motor at idle, back off the adjusting screw until it begins to clatter. Now turn the screw back down until the clatter just stops. Continue to turn the adjusting screw down 1 turn to force the lifter into the center of its travel. You may have to vary that figure of 1 turn, I found 3/4 turn was best on my old 170
