I noticed today that Life Magazine has put a ton of pictures out on the Internet that you can search Google for.

I thought for the heck of it I would search Mustang (without much luck) but then I searched Ford.

I found the following two pictures that peeked my interest..

Location: Flora, IL, US
Date taken: September 1960
Photographer: Francis Miller

This made me wonder what was all this about? A couple more searches lead me to some information that this was a Ford promotion to introduce the 1961 Ford line-up. It appears they chose little Flora, IL (typical small town USA)to become "Ford Town USA" since it was (at the time) the population center of the United States. They sent 1374 new cars and 115 new trucks (and one fire truck!) to Flora. They mowed down a field and let each family in the town loose to each lay claim to one new car or truck for their use for 1 week.

Anyway it is interesting and it appears it got some national press.

Flora, IL is about 100 straight east of St.Louis.

Any chance anyone here, remember this?

Thanks.. I should have caught that error.

Can you imagine, they could never do anything like this today.. Just think of the liability they would be afraid of.

Not only the liability but how many cars would not make it back to Ford at the end of the week.

I was reading another article on it that said they only had one car that needed repair during that week too. That most likely would not work today either.

That would be cool if they could figure it out, though...Maybe GM could do it with all the extra cars and trucks they have sitting around the country.

Hey, didn't Ford do something like it though a couple years ago? Let people drive a Ford truck instead of their other brand truck for a week to see the quality....Or was it one of their cars????

Yes, Ford did a "drive a truck" for a week. I believe one of the requirements was that you drove a competitors brand to begin with.

So my Grandpa remembers this, he didn’t live in city limits but was a bus driver at the time for Flora, so he got a truck for the week. He also has a big flag that had their logo on it saying “Fordtown USA” on it with a giant heart on the US. Everything you mentioned he recalls, he said it was amazing very few cars came back damaged. So happy you found this and shared! Very proud of my little hometown Flora, IL. Do you know how I might find the LIFE magazine that covered this? Do you have the edition? My name is Kendal Sacchieri, would love to get in contact if you have any more information.

Kendal,
This thread is over 10 years old. I looked at his statistics and Heap64 has not logged onto this site since February.

I believe back issues of Life magazine are available online. This event occurred in Sept, 1960 according to the original post so I would guess the article appeared a few weeks later. As I recall Life and Look were weekly magazines.
I don't think you have enough posts to send a PM to Heap64. He should receive an email telling him that he has a PM so maybe he will see it and come back to this website. I will send him a PM telling him to look here.
