I don’t get it, the car accelerated quick and smooth before taking engine out for restoration and body work, put back together, same parts, clutch pressure plate, etc., but now it’s almost impossible to accelerate from first gear without engine bogging to a quiet stalled out sound, sometime stalling completely or barely accelerating and hesitating no matter how much or how little throttle. Note: we did change from 2bbl intake and carb to 4bbl. Any suggestions? It’s unsafe to pull out in traffic. Once going in 1st, 1st through 4th is just fine. Please help and nice to meet everyone!

What size carb? What are the timing specs, base and total? At what RPM is total timing in?

What are the other specifics of the engine?
Auto lite 4100 initial timing maybe around 8. Total mechanical timing maybe 3500 to 4000 rpm. 289 all stock. It has electronic ignition in distributor, no points. All original C code car.

What does a vacuum gauge show when connected at idle? Should be fairly rock solid if there are no leaks.
Honestly haven’t hooked up a gauge at this point. Trying to get advice on the possibilities and you’ve helped a lot with what we can try to do to get it back to normal. Will def be doing a vacuum test and adjust timing. It just runs so smooth and perfect every time except initial acceleration. Reverse works and engages great, just that first gear staring out is completely wrong.
