There is a bent wire clip (retainer?) that somehow holds the clutch
fork to the fulcrum (pivot) inside the bellhousing. I can't seem to make it
do the right thing. Anybody know how to put this together. thanks.

Try turning it around. You can install it in the fork two ways. One of those ways will allow you to snap the retainer over the tang on the fulcrum. If it's reversed it won't snap on tighly. Also if the retainer is bent you may need to replace it.
