Have been on VMF trying to find information about wheels and tires for my 66 coupe. The forum has been very helpful and I would like to document my experience and share the outcome based on the below objective. Hopefully it will help someone else.

Objectives
  1. Want to avoid rolling fenders
  2. Would like to keep wheels and tires the same on front and back (at this point going staggered)
  3. Would like an agressive look with the tires "tucked" under the fenders
  4. Driver car and not autocross
  5. Would like to go with a Scott Drake Legendary 17x8 wheels with 4.75 bs and 235/45/17s (at this point going staggered)
Setup (all new parts)
  • 1" sway bar
  • Koni shocks
  • Stock contol arms and perches
  • 1" lower spring uncut
  • Shelby drop
  • 5 leaf mid eye lowering springs rear
  • CSRP disk brakes front
  • Drum brakes rear
I have reviewed dodgestang's list, Vintage Mustang Wheel and Tire Guide, Mustang Plus Wheel backspacing, CJ Pony, and even contacted Legendary Wheels direct.

According to dodgestang
All: 17x8 with 4.75 bs and 235/45R17s (closest to my setup)

According to Mustang Plus
All: 17x8 with 4.75 bs and 235/45R17s

According to Vintage Mustang Wheel and Tire
Front:17x8 with 4.75 bs and 235/45R17s
Rear: 17x8 with 4.50 bs and 235/45R17s

According to CJ Pony
Front:17x7 with 4.25 bs and 225-235/45R17s
Rear: 17x8 with 4.50 bs and 245/45R17s

According to Legendary Wheel
Front:17x7 with 4.25 bs and 225-235/45R17s
Rear: 17x8 with 4.50 bs and 245/45R17s *
*Test fit the 17x7 from the front on the rear to see if I can go with the 17x8

I purchased the following
Front Rim:17x7 with 4.25 bs
Rear Rim: 17x8 with 4.50 bs

Tires: A 235/45R17s and a 245/45R17s

Will "mock up" the fit before installing to determine what works and what doesn't.

As soon as the items arrive, I will post an update with my findings.

Attached a photo of the car. Already have the staggered setup :) Will post a before and after once complete.

why not 17x8x4.75 squared ?
That is still my objective. The tech person from LW was recommending the 17 x 7 x 4.25 on the front and back. He stated the 17 x 8 x 4.75 would not work on the front but might work on the rear.

I will mount the 8s (w/o tires) to check for clearance on front and back. I am hoping the 7s will be a backup and returned and stay with the 8s all around. If all goes well, should know by next week.

This tech guy is actually the owner of a really nice 65 fastback with a 427. He was running 16x8's front and 17x8s on rear with 245/45s and rolled fenders. I feel that he was being conservative in his suggestions. Most suppliers and tech people seem to take that approach to avoid unhappy customers if it doesn't work and they won't take them back. Makes sense.

LW was for Legendary Wheels.

Not really sure why the 17 x 8 with the 4.75 BS wont work. That's exactly what I have on mine with 245/45/17 front and rear

427W stroker I assume. Odd he would go 16x8 front 17x8 rear both will work but 16x8 sometimes has more fitment issues than 17x8
yeah most places error on the conservative side

So... the 17x8s are still on back order from Legendary Wheels. This will be the third Friday in a row that they will be shipping next week. Hopefully they will be shipped on 5/28, but I am not going to hold my breath.

I have 17x8, 4.75 backspacing, with 245/45 sport comps up front on my 66. The front of my car is dropped about 2" (UCA and SoT suspension) and I have the fenders rolled. Had I left it alone, I could have put 235's pretty easily up there even with a little bit of a drop...maybe even the 245's.

My rear tires do not fit your requirements at all (17x9.5, 275/40...modified wheel wells, 3link, and rolled fenders)

Thanks for the feedback. When the 17x8s show up, I a going to mount a 245 and a 235 and test fit the fronts. Pretty confident the 17x8s with 245s will work on the back. Just not sure what will configuration will fit the front.

Mounted the rims. The 17 x 8s look good with the 245s on the rear. With the engine out of the car it seems like the front end is not sitting right to determine fit. If all goes well I will drop the engine next week.

Hi There,

I am curious about your wheels on the rear. The 17x9.5 what is the back spacing on these? Are you using the standard width 9" rear?

Thanx!!

@65AScoupe

I have a Street or Track rear housing which i 'think' is pretty close to the standard width.
My rear wheels are American Racing TT2 with 6 - 3/8" backspacing. To get the wheels to sit in the housing without rubbing i have 7/8" worth of spacers to bring the spacing to 5 1/2" and it's darn near perfect. I could stand to add about 1/8" to make it 5 - 5/8" backspacing.

Now bear in mind, my fender lips are mashed flat, the front of the wheel house has been clearanced, and I no longer have leaf springs.

Hey thanks for the reply,

I'm trying to fit wider tires on the rear of mine. Do you happen to have any close up pictures of the modifications you had to do?
I still have leaf spring set up and running 245/45/17 front & rear. I already rolled the fenders.

Thanx!

Joe
