The spring attaches to a 1/4" rod inserted into the well liner. Its not reproduced but its a common rod available at Home Depot etc.

Look at the first picture posted by NEFaurora, it show the rod in the well liner with the spring attached.

Thank you so much for the information. The pictures posted by NEFaurora are extremely helpful. I will get a 1/4" steel rod at HD and get the well liner installed correctly. The pictures in the 1966 Ford Mustang Assembly Manual didn't show the detail that I needed to get it right. With your help and others at VMF I have been able to restore my 66 Mustang Convertible very close to what it was when it rolled off the assembly line at the San Jose back in the day.
