I've had this car for about two years...about time to post some pics and progress.

68 Mustang I picked up in Feb 2015 off Craig's List. Originally a 289 car, it motor was swapped out for a 302 at some point. Appears to be for maintenance reasons, and not performance...the car seems very much bone stock. Still has the original air cleaner assembly and 2bbl intake / carb.

I was told one owner, California car. Of the documentation I have, it appears true, and there is not much rust.

I ran the Marti report, and it's a very early 67 build:

Carpet out...found some rust under the drivers side where the drain plug is...but doesn't appear the frame rail is affected.

Hoping I can get away with some clean up and rust converter for now if it's not structural.

Slow going...but making some progress:

Passenger seat almost done...looking pretty good for my first time. Finally stripped down the driver seat, and redid it too. Both have the original seat tracks reinstalled after a treatment of while lithium.

Trunk is cleaned up...gas tank has some surface rust...so I'll probably replace it next year. But for now, put down new underlayment and reinstalled the carpet. Although I cleaned up the existing liner...once I figure out if its original or not, I may replace it too.

The taillight wiring was hanging down, so I reclipped it and used some non-period loom for now. The center ground was not connected, so I found a proper screw and re-grounded it.

I was able to cover the hole and the pin holes. It should be good for a while... Here's some pictures. Getting close to reinstalling the interior!

Progress:

- underlayment for front, rear floors,mind rear seat trimmed and installed
- carpet trimmed and mostly installed (still need to do the trim plates)
- seats assembled and installed (still need to install the backs)

When for a nice drive in my new seats!

I pulled the steering box for rebuild. Since the Mustang is relatively clean in the engine bay, it unbolted very easy. It took me a bit of maneuvering to get it out...but not too difficult.

I sent it to CHOCKOSTANG...they rebuilt it within like 24 hours! I just got it back today...I'm yet to install it, but here's a pic. Dan and Carol @ CHOCKOSTANG were great to deal with.

Thanks! I'm real happy with how the seats came out (hog rings are a pain though!). A new package tray made all the difference in the rear. I still need to do the rear seat, but no rush, since it's in decent condition.

I'm thinking of keeping the gauges and dash with the patina look, and hopefully the inner door shells as well. For the doors, it will depend on if I can reskin them, or if complete new shells are required. I have the new door cards as well, but don't want to install until I figure out the door situation.

Picked up a new set of tires to be mounted shortly, so that will help on the safety side...no idea the mix of tires on there now.

Except for the exterior bumps and bruises, she's pretty solid as far as I can tell!

Looks good. I'm glad to see you're being reasonable in getting the car in running condition. To have fun actually driving it rather then blowing it apart in pieces on the garage floor.

Thanks Tom. Yeah, the first one I looked at was a 65 fastback 6-cylinder that had been sitting outside for 8+ years, with a lot of rust. I think I was fooling myself that I'd be able to get it moving in a short time.

When I bought this one, the brakes didn't work well, and the tranny slipped. I changed the master cylinder, a rear brake cylinder and bled the lines, they work great. Tranny just needed fluid...imagine that!

This past summer I rebuild the carb and change the fuel pump due to a leak, so the engine side of the fuel system is updated. I have the gas tank kit from CJPP, just need to install.

Also ended up with a new battery, cables, alternator and voltage regulator after requiring several jump starts! I kicked her over about a month ago, system is holding a charge...so that's a good sign too.

Hopefully back on the road for a little driving this month!

Looking real good mate. As Tom said it seems like you rather drive it than work on it for ever so heres a thumbs up for that. I bet you cant wait to take it for a spin eh :). Will keep a eye out for updates. Cheers mate.

Spent Tuesday cleaning up the steel wheels and painting them. They came out ok, maybe going to wet sand them a bit or something.

Today had new tires put on, front alignment and chassis lube. Already feels safer! Gonna clean up the hub caps soon.

Nothing major...changed out the engine gauge / AC clutch harness with a new 4-pronger from CJPP. Old one looks original...and was very brittle!

Nice build thread. Stupid Photobucket. The mods turned on post editing though, so you can go back and update all your pics to a new host.

Your car is optioned identically to my '68, except for color (mine was originally diamond blue), brakes, and mine is a six. Nice thing about yours is that it still has all those options!

Thanks for the bump. Yeah, I need to take some time and get the pics sorted and reloaded. Very aggravating.

I’d have to take a look at the Marti report, but pretty sure mine was a San Jose built car. We could have sister cars!

Not much to update on upgrades, I did the points and condenser mid summer, but I think that was about it. I guess that’s a good sign, means I actually got some driving in this summer. It’s been running well, very well actually. If cash permits next year, would like to do a suspension package and maybe get the body cleaned up in a few areas. We’ll see.

Oh, and past the 50-year birthdate. Pretty cool!

Ok, I think I found all of my old photos, and now have them loaded on imgur. So, gonna try to resurrect my build thread. I’ll add some new posts, and hopefully get the Mods to give me some edit permissions for a bit. Bear with me!

July 2017: took a stab at using Plasti dip, not bad (more to come on this in 2018/2019):
