Ok, so Ford's marketing team decided to call them Sportsroofs (as well as adding "sport" to a lot of other names, i.e., "SportSlats" etc.). But I've read that guys back then still called them fastbacks. I've referred to mine as both, and have had people correct me both ways. So, what's the general concensus? Call it like Ford does, or by what it really is?

I was always under the impression it was by the year. Early models, up to 68, were referred to as “fastbacks” while 69 up were marketed as ‘sportsroof.”

No, I’m not a betting man… this is old memory on my part, not knowledge… huge difference.

Officially, it's a Sportsroof and I have the '69 sales brochure to prove it. <grin> But we all called it a fastback. In my view both are correct.

As Mach1Pilot said ....."Officially, it's a Sportsroof"
However, being one of the guys from "back then", it will always be a fastback in my book.

As the owener of a 69 sportsroof I have learned to say it's aSPORTSROOF That way it is more fun to see who knows what they are looking at. Those who don't are still wondering what it is. :) :) :)

I know it is called sportroof, but the name fastback has a better sound to it. Anybody who wants to know, I call it a fastback.

I tell people it's a fastback but it seems whenever I'm on VMF writing about it I use SportsRoof. Probably makes me sound smarter.

Look very closely and see if you can find what is different on the 69-70 cars. I'm not saying this is the difference between a Fastback and Sportsroof, but it is interesting. :)

Fastback sounds better than sportsroof. Fastback implies movement and speed and that is appropriate for a car that looks like it is moving when it's parked!

Heck, even though I remember Ford calling the '69-'70 sportsroofs, I've always called them fastbacks. However, I have always called the '71-'73 flatbacks.

Mike, it's simple. The 69-70s had the small vent window behind the door glass. 68 and earlier didn't (Shelby windows don't count). It's still a fastback, any way you look at it! Sportsroof is 100% marketing BS!

I call it both, depending on who I'm talking to, but I agree it should be called by the Ford name.
