I've been wanting a 1969 Mustang, and today one showed up on a corner lot. It has a 302, Auto and the owner says the passenger floor rail needs to be replaced (rust). It looks alright, but not great. He's asking $3500. What should I check for, and what is a reasonable price. I'm finishing a 1979 Datsun 280ZX restore, and close on a 1968 Datsun 2000 Roadster restore. So I've got some idea of the years in a restore, but I'd love to get going on a Mustang, if this is the right one.

Thanks for the help,

Bob

Railings can be tricky if you haven't done them before.

And while restoring Datsuns gives you a leg up on say, a complete beginning restorer, it doesn't help much... It's like having all your experience restoring Camaros or Mustangs, and then restoring a VW Bug... But we'll be here to help!

Make sure that the body (frame) is straight also. $3,500 seems a little low on that car... Most 302 '69 Mustang I've seen have been up around $4,500 with a fairly new engine and transmission.. Make sure there are no major problems. Remember that a car that appears inexpensive at the outset due to asking price may VERY well cost you in the long run, as is what happened to me and my previous Mustang, a 1967

I bought a car with similar problems many years ago (around '92), paid $1800, a lot more rust showed up once I got further in. At the going prices then it would have cost about $3500 to get it sound again. Car was basically a total loss for me. Then I bought a San Jose car, had been in CA and TX all it's life, makes a big difference. Good luck.

I bought a rather inexpensive 69 Sportsroof over 4 years ago. I'm still looking for little pieces here and there. If the car is relatively complete and stock, then $3500.00 seems fair. I'd make sure the mechanical stuff is in good shape and the rail is the only major repair that needs to be done.

If it's a sportsroof, and no other major issues (which there's sure to be if the frame rails are rotted), $3500 would be a good price.

If it's a coupe, pass, or get him to drop the price by about $2000. I paid $1500 for my '69 coupe last year. Some small rust issues (very small), and needed lots of TLC. I'm now into the car about $2k and it's my daughter's daily driver ... and a damn good one at that *LOL*.

A new Utahn popping up here almost weekly!
Bob, if you want a Mustang to have fun with and modify, the 69 FB 302 would be a good choice because there isn't a lot special about it.
However, if you have a few more greenbacks and want a nicer car, a club member has a 69 GT Sportsroof for sale - I believe it's a 390 with 4 spd. It's in nice, but not show shape. Asking $8K. If you don't know Mustangs 69 GTs are considered quite rare.
Email me if interested. Welcome to VMF and Mustang mania!

I took some pictures today and put them on my website. If anyone has time to check it out, let me know if there's anything I should know about the car, and from the little you can tell from pictures, what it might be worth. I'm meeting the owner tonight to start it up, and check it more thoroughly. What should I check for?

The website is: http://www.utahz.com/Main/Other/other.html

Thanks, this is going to be Great! If it's this one, or another one, It's going to be a blast.
