I'm starting this to post progress on my engine build. My son and I are going to put this engine together.

I have gotten a 1965 289 block. It's cleaned, decked, and bored .040 over. The shop is going to install cam bearings, soft plugs and paint it black. Then we will start working on the crank shaft. ( I still have to get that out of the old engine )

I will be reusing the heads from my old engine and anything else that I can salvage.

OK hadn't seen anything about it on here just wanted to check before you got to far with the build. It's great you and your son are doing this together.
Ok, so I took the heads in and bad news one is shot. It's cracked in several places and is not worth repairing. Machine shop is looking for another head. I'm wondering is it worth it or should I just get new heads. By the time I get everything done to the heads that needs to be I can get a new set complete with valves from Summit for about the same price.

These would be cheaper than fixing mine would have been even if they both were good and they have everything already done.

Nothing wrong with those.

Ok, So we got all the pistons installed today. Here are some pictures of my son helping. He was really excited to do this and I think he learned a lot.

trying to post more pictures but since they were not taken on my iPhone they don't want to load.
Well I pulled the trigger on those ebay heads. I called the machine shop this morning and he didn't think that he could find anything that would be better.

Little late to be checking ring gap after the pistons are installed.
Why not have gone with the standard up grade of a double roller timing set:shrug:
Well upgrades would be nice but they just aren't in the budget. There's a lot more that this car needs and I have to decide what I can afford and what I can't.

understandable I built my 289 on the cheap also I didn't have any professional machining done but spent it elsewhere
Yeah the machining took a good bit of the money I had for this project. Also turned out my heads were shot. I was lucky enough to get a set machined and ready to go off ebay for half what it would have cost to machine mine IF they had been good.
Oh and the assembly pictures are out of order because the last one I posted was shot with my wife's camera and not my iPhone. The site wouldn't let me upload it. It was too large.

update

Ok. The heads that I bought off ebay have arrived. They are 66 heads. They have been cleaned, decked, had hardened exhaust seats installed and new valve springs. I got the pair for just over $400. Also in the picture is my 1968 intake manifold. I had that cleaned. Now if I can get some decent weather I can paint them.

I'm considering porting the heads. Seems from what I've read something I can handle myself.

A little more progress

Well while we had a break in the weather My son and I got the head, timing cover, and intake painted. Wish I could finish putting this engine together but I have to wait until the engine compartment is ready. I'm doing this in my basement and if I assemble it it will be to heavy for me to get out of the basement.

Just my opinion, but I would take those heads to your machine shop and have them checked out. Anyone can make a mistake including the shop that put the heads together. Not saying that there isn't some good stuff available on eBay, but if you don't have the expertise to check them have your shop do it to make sure they are ready to run and no corners were cut.

You've done everything right so far and I'm enjoying watching.
I've been considering that. They have new hardened exhaust seats but they don't look like they sit in quite far enough to me.
