recently started driving my mach 1 390 car some. runs good. was said to rec. rebuilt. probably was from looks of car, everything else was. seems when motor gets hot from driving the oil pressure starts near high, goes back very close to low. not overly famaliar with a 390. havent really checked anything in detail yet. does a 390 normally hold decent oil pressure? thanks.

First off, I don't think I'd rely on that stock gauge--those gauges are notorious for improper readings, so get a good quality oil pressure gauge (mechanical is more accurate, but if you buy a brand name like autometer, I don't think it matters electrical or mechanical). Second, if the gauge is still reading low, an engine only needs 8psi to function properly, but know that the low pressure may be an indication of worn main bearings allowing the pressure to bleed out around the wide gaps between the crank and bearings.
