My 65/66 style 4-speed shifter reverse lockout "finger" does not pull up far enough to engage the hole in the shifter box and allow selection of reverse. How does this thing come apart so I can shorten the cable (or whatever) to get higher travel of the finger? Do you have to grind off the weld or peened over place on the bottom? Then what??

Thanks Kevin. I thought I remembered something about this, but it was almost 4 years ago! Good job.

You might want to put in a shim on the bottom of the tranny shifter, where the bushings attach. This would raise the shifter relative to the hole.

I have the opposite problem: I can go into reverse without lifting up on the reverse lockout knob.

Thanks, Mid! Two washers under each bolt will get me there. I just need to decide if this works as a permanent fix for me or whether I should attempt to take this thing apart. If I do take it apart, then I'll probably want to have it re-chromed - this project could take weeks!

Kevin,
Can you refresh this link. I can't get it to go to what I assume it used to.
Just got done installing new clutch and now having the same problem that rockhouse66 did even though it was all fine getting into reverse for years prior to pulling the shifter to install the clutch.
Thanks

That's a pretty old thread and I don't think that guys been around for a while (about 13 years). Try this link and see if it helps you any:

Also this seems to explain what you need to do since it talks about just replacing the clutch:
