My toploader seems to be making a lot more noise than it used to. (My be my imagination.)
I notice it more in 1st and 2nd. I don'y hear any noise in 3rd or 4th.
How noisey is your toploader?

Mines got a whine to it in lower gears as well that I’ve had for 20+ years since it was rebuilt. Always thought this was normal. Not giving me any trouble in all these years. So I’ve always maintained the gear oil in it and kept driving it.

You could check the gear oil level and look for metal shavings on the magnetic plug if what you’re hearing is indeed new.

Mine had a little bit of a whine in 3rd. It's from a 69 Merc Montego, 351W. As far as I know never rebuilt. Other then that it shifts fine and no other issues.

Check your oil level. If it's good, then plan on a rebuild in the future. Noise that disappears as you go through the gears is the countershaft and/or output shaft support needle bearings.

I've had my whining toploader in my 69 Mach 1 Cobrajet for 30 years. Thought it to be normal.
