OK- to solve the "occasional stalling when first accelerating from a stop" problem I was having, I just changed out the vacuum advance, changed out the accelerator pump diaphragm (which was leaking and showed to be ruptured after removal), and tried a couple different settings on the accelerator pump linkage.

Motor still starts rough, but instead of idle improving as it warms up, it now has gotten worse, and backfires whenever I let off the gas. Also, it seemed to get rather hot rather quickly (within a few blocks).

Any suggestions where to look next, as prob is now worse? Any help appreciated.
