I’ve got a line on a 5.0L and trans from a 95 Explorer. The engine should work perfectly for my son’s 66. I am wondering if the 4R70W from the Explorer is a good trans for a Mustang or if it is geared differently or there is any other considerations that make it a poor choice. I already have a AODE from a 95 Mustang I could use.

Is it a 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive 4R70W? It is my understanding that all 4R70Ws have the same wide ratio gearing, however 98 and up are digital, while 97 and earlier are analog control. I'm told 2001and newer are the strongest from the factory. I imagine any 4R70W is stronger than a stock AODE. Will you be running a stock mechanical speedometer or VSS?

I’ll find out about the 2 or 4 wheel drive? So do the current controller that are available work with the analog versions? I am planning a stock speedo.

Yes, the connections and harnesses vary through the years. Whether you use their controller or not, I would recommend going through the US Shift documentation as it will give insight into the differences. I believe there are two tail shaft lengths available for the 2 wheel drive 4R70W. I don't think a 4 wheel drive will work without some siginifacvt modifications, I installed a 2001 4R70W pulled from a v6 Mustang into my 65. Bolted right up to my SBF and was able to reuse my existing C4 starter. The 2001 also has the mechanical speedometer.

If it's a 4wd/awd version the transmission will need to be COMPLETELY disassembled and a 2wd output shaft and tailhousing swapped in.
Ok confirmed it is a 2WD trans, would it then be the same tail shaft as a Mustang?

IIRC it should. I think the Mustang 4R70W tailhousing is 10-1/4" long and the Explorer should be the same. There IS a 11-1/4" tailhousing but I think it might be for Panther-chassis....

So would you recommend getting this or looking for a later model that’s stronger and digital? He’s asking $750 for the 5.0L and trans

Or you can swap tailshaft housings to use the smaller yoke....I believe this is another workaround. I would go with a 4r70, and a Baumann controller. I "think" your AODE tailshaft should work.

AOD tailshaft housing and a T5 swap slip yoke will work. That's what I have on my 4R.

I rebuilt mine and did the J-Mod while I was at it, but that might be digging deeper than you'd want to go right now.
