I recently purchased a 65 San Jose Fastback with a missing door tag. I need some help estimating the build date. The unit number is #138188. Thanks for the help.

I see according to the Mustang Production Guide, your car used to belong to a Jerry McConnell. That aside, I believe your car was built either the 15 or 16th of September, '64.

How were you able to tell that? I even wrote to the Henry Ford Museum Research Foundation, and they couldn't give me any information. I don't have a door tag either, just a VIN of 5F08C787800.

It just pure luck that the VIN of Neil's car was in the Production Guide, Volume 1. The data in the book was compiled by Jim Smart & Jim Haskell, and in large part was provided to those gentleman by individual owners like myself. Unfortunately, your VIN is not. But, 787793 followed by 787862 are, with build dates of 13U and 14U respectively. Your car probably was a 13U, or July 13, 1965.

Thanks! That was a piece of information I thought I couldn't get. That fits with the stamp on the side of the heater blower motor, which was June 65.
Thanks again,

Please remember that this is not the day the car was built but the date Ford thought it would be completed when they recieved the order at the plant
