Which is better?
The 65 canister type, or the "double" barrel 66 style?

I put the 66 style on my 65 C code car with a stock 2100 carburetor and there seems to be more clearance. Otherwise, I'm not privy to the technical differences as both out around 5 to 6.5 PSI. The 66 and later style is also much more affordable.

The '65-style pump is much better at filtration and does away with the need for a screw-in-the-carb filter and rubber connecting hose.

Well, the 66 pump without the filter is half that price.

$12.97 + the cost of the filter for a pump and filter that has far less surface area and will need to be replaced much more often?

I put the 65 pump on everything it will fit.

Not to mention that if $29.79 vs $12.97 is an issue, you are in the wrong hobby.
