My son just bought a 66 coupe 289 3 speed on the floor . It has a hard time shifting and the shifter slops all over the place. I pulled the boot and in looks as if someone has moved the whole shifter to the rear. The shifter is siting about 2 inchs to the rear of the hole. The metal is bent from trying to get it into 1 and 3. The rubber bushing are also gone but I found a new set in the glove box. Is there two different blot paterns to bolt the shifter to the trans. The shifter is the type bolted to the side of the trans. Any ideas.
Thanks Scott

Sounds like you have a shifter for a Chevy or other car besides Ford Toploader and the bracket has been adapted. Buying a new shifter seems like a good idea.
