Hi - I just bought a 66 GT Coupe. It has the factory 4 speed, with the finger pull reverse lockout. I think it is a T10 transmission. It seems like the shifter is really sloppy. Is there some kind of rebuild kit that I can buy that will have all the plastic bushings and stuff like that to restore the shifter?
Thanks!

Most of the mustang specialty places sell the kits for around 15-20 dollars. They will give you the new steel cups and springs, along with rubber grommets for the handle for where the bolts pass through-it is usually a combination of these being worn out and of one or both of the cups falling out that makes for the slop.I would check with Mustangs Unlimted, NPD,RestoreMustangs.com or CJ pony parts for best prices. Not sure if new bolts come with the kits, you may want to pick up a couple of these new special shoulder bolts, sometimes if bushings are real bad they get worn too.

This will cure some of the slop. But a really worn shifter will have the "Lower" shifter that is pinned to the shift shaft worn as well. It is press fit to the shaft. Repros are available if needed.
To find out...remove the shift handle and move the lower shifter that the shift handle bolts to. It should pivot around the pin but not have any perceptable play from an enlongated hole.

I have seen the part you talk about broken, but hardly ever worn, but at over $50 for that tiny little U-ee thing, I have just taken a 3 speed shifter base and converted over, you can usually pick up an entire used 3 speed shifter for $10 to $20 dollars.
