This will cure some of the slop. But a really worn shifter will have the "Lower" shifter that is pinned to the shift shaft worn as well. It is press fit to the shaft. Repros are available if needed.
To find out...remove the shift handle and move the lower shifter that the shift handle bolts to. It should pivot around the pin but not have any perceptable play from an enlongated hole.
