Hi, I was wondering about a 67/68 fastbacks do the engines have to be number specific for those years to be numbers matching? Or if it's lets say a 390 I would have to just find a period 390? Any help on this would be great. Thanks for your time. Dan

68 had VIN's and a few 67's. Most 67's are just casting# and date codes to ne correct.

Why not? Wasn't it law by 68 that VINS be stamped on powerplants?

It was a federally mandated law in 68 however there are hundreds if not thousands of documented cars that for whatever reason didn't get them (including a 68 GT 500 about 30 feet away from me) Some got partial stampings, others (like mine) got a stamp in the form of a date code, some got no stamping. Can't say I've ever heard a good reason why but it does seem to be more common in early cars. Ford was coming off a big strike in the fall of 67 and could be in trying to get production back up to speed a lot of these things were overlooked.
