I picked up an original 67 flip open gas cap today and when checking out the reproduction caps that are available they say for show only and not every day use. What gives ?

They have to say that for legal reasons. There was a lawsuit over pop-off gas caps about 20 years ago.

The spring loaded seal which plugs the filler tube was the issue. When that affair was replaced with the screw on cap, that satisfied the feds. Has to do with venting I think, as said above. Anyways, new caps are sold with screw on filler tube cap under the pop open cap, and the actual pop open pieces are included in the package. You install which ever one you want...

I use a repop flip open, never had an issue. I do use the screw-on cap just to make me feel a little more at ease with fuel spillage while in motion...
