The event should have an alignment pin on the back that goes through the dash to keep it properly aligned. Then there should be one tab on each side that fit under the instrument bezel trim and the passenger side trim. The two trim pieces hold it in place just like the blank plate used when there is no A/C

I just went through this with my non-air '67. The original non-air piece was just sandwiched in place between the instrument cluster and the glovebox trim. The A/C vent should have two threaded studs, and two speed nuts that thread on to securely hold the vent to the dash. I'm not sure if that was a running change (if some early cars had the vent sandwiched in place, and they eventually started securing the vent to the dash because it was moving around too much), if it's a '67 vs. '68 thing, etc.

'67 is a weird year, with lots of small running changes.
