I am looking at purchasing a 68 Mustang GT with a 289. The question I have is: Was the 289 2v a valid option in 1968? I have seen conflicting information on wether or not you could get a 68 GT with the 289 (the only 289 offered in 68 was the 2v carb.). If it was, would it have the dual exhaust or not?

Bogus GT.

To get the GT package in 68 you had to have at least a 302-4V. Funny enough but the GT on the 302 came only with front drums base. All the GT's in 68 had dual exhaust with the quad tips.

If it's true that you had to get the 302 4v in order to get the GT, then that means GT's were unavailable for the first part of 68. The 302 was introduced midyear. A little hard to believe that Ford would discontinue the GT option even for a couple months during that time. But it makes for interesting trivia.

No, the 302-4v was available from the start of the year. It was the 302-2v that became available mid year as a replacement for the 289-2v

Must have a 302 - 4V to be a true GT. According to the 1968 Mustang options sheet, a GT was available on all models with V8 except 289, came with dual exhaust, 6 inch rims with F70 Wide Oval tires, Fog Lamps, HD suspension, pop open gas cap, and painted GT wheels with trim rings and GT centre caps.

The GT/CS package was cosmetic only, ie; fiberglass deck lid and Tbird tail lites, side scoops and fog lites. And they did come in the 289 2V, my dad and I bought one back in 75. Correct me if I am wrong but the only GT Mustang that was available from Ford with a 2V was in 1967. The only requirement was a V8 and only the HP289 and the 390 came with the dual exaust. fd

I have a 68 Cal Special with a 289 2V. Even though the car is called GT/CS, it did not originally have all the GT options.
