thats 170 at the rear wheels..in '72 Ford switched its ratings to the rear wheels instead of the flywheel..in reality..your 289 has about 140 HP

Don't forget about the amount of torque that 400 would make

68 fastback, 390 4V premium fuel
80 5.0 hatch, just finished
91 5.0 coupe, daily driver
84 RamCharger 4x4 extreme mudsliger and winter junker

I had a 1972 Ford LTD with a 400 in it - it would yank your neck off if you floored the accelerator. My wife used to call it "the green bomb"; I had lots of fun smoking the crap out of Camaros and late model Jap stuff with it. Of course, they all eventually passed me at the next gas station..the thing got about 8 miles to the gallon.

I have to disagree. I don't think Ford ever rated HP at the rear wheels. The HP by the SAE went from gross to Net. This was also changed again in 93 or so to pick random engines from the assembly lines and the ratings dropped slightly again. All ratings are at the flywheel.
