Does anyone have any knowledge around exactly why Ford switched to 5/16" pressure valves in the power steering control valves for 1968?

Just curious. I've never heard any rationale behind why things were switched.

Flow, more fluid to make the ram work, push --pull.
Cars got bigger, and then here came the mighty FE's. that jumped in them.

That seems like a plausible explanation, but the switch from 1/4" to 5/16" occurred for the 68 model year and (of course) both the 390 and 428 were put into the 1967s.

Was there a specific problem in 1967 with 1/4" pressure fittings that caused the change?
