Ditto on Nailbender. Last time I swapped my engine I had a 1" spacer on top of an E-Brock Performer 351 intake and a 3" air filter. Couldn't close the hood
Swapped to a 2" air filter and I have to crank the filter nut down pretty tight. I'm living with about 3/16" clearance and it's working fine.
I ran a 1/2" separator beneath a Holly XE Carb with a 2.5" filter on a Performer RPM. Don't forget the drop bases. They work, as I use one. The whole shebang was close, but worked. They do provide additional clearance
