My car has a '68 J code 302. Because my car was made by a small manufacturer, it has a nice bass plaque stating "This vehicle is exempt from all Federal DOT and EPA regulations." Honest. Anyway, it does not have an air pump. But it does have the cast iron air pump/alternater bracket.I wolud like to remove this heavy, ugly, only partially used monstrosity. However I do show the car and would like to stay in the world of possibilities. I have a Mustangs Unlimited catalog, which shows the more common two piece alt. bracket set and says it's for '65-'69. Did any '68 302 actually come from the factory with this two piece bracket? Did any J codes use this bracket?

are your heads the correct dated heads for you J code engine? check to see if they have the smog tube holes drilled and tapped or if they have been plugged. If they are standard heads without the smog holes, chances are it never came with the air pump to begin with....

The heads are deffinately the one year only J code heads. The air injection holes had plugs in them from the manufacturer. I removed the air tubes whem I rebuilt and ported them. Could you get a '69 302 (non Boss) without the air pump?
