After checking battery voltage with engine running as John suggested, you can take it to your local Pepboys, Autozone, etc. They will check the charging system for free. A bad voltage regulator can cause the symptom you described, as well.
Randy, along with the other suggestions, check the belt. I had a similar situation, turned out that one of the bolts had not been tightened and I lost belt tension.
