buddy of mine has a 67 coupe with a 289 in it that he bought 2 weeks ago. previous owner put in a new battery right before purchase. went to start car up few days ago and the motor was dragging to start up as if battery going dead. he put on a new alternator yesterday and started the car up. within a minute the alternator was very hot and you could smell an odor coming from it and then i could see smoke coming from near the pulley. any ideas as to what the problem is

Take the alt. and battery into Auto Zone or like business and have them tested. Don't mention the smoke you let out. If they check good, replace the regulator AND check the wiring real good prior to any more running.
