There's not much you can do except adjust the idle mixture screws, short of a complete rebuild. I'd first replace all the electrical stuff, and if you are still having problems, then rebuild the carb. It's cheap, reasonably easy to do, but your problem is probably electrical in nature. I always advice a complete replacement of wires, rotor, points when buying a new old car, as you just don't know how old that stuff is.
