Trying to get my manifolds back on I see that the old donut gasket seems to be fused to the exhaust pipe. Man what a pain. The heat fused everything down there. Getting things apart was a cow and now putting it back together is one too. I've been spraying gasket remover down there and scraping but it's still on pretty good. Any tips?

Did the donut come apart or something? They should just come off in one big piece by tapping it.

The replacement I got was metal but the one on there now is made of something else. It's not cork but it is soft and stuck on good.

Are you talking about the round gasket that goes between the manifold and the exhaust pipe? Or the one that goes between the manifold and engine?

Your replacement is sintered iron the one on the pipe is a composition gasket. Yes with old age they rot into place. You will have to break it apart to get it off. Use a small chisel to chip away at it. Once you have split it you will be able to peel of the remaining portion. Be careful not to damage the pipe end.

It's the one between the exhaust pipe and the manifold. I took a hammer to it after you suggested tapping it and bigger chunks started coming off but I'm nowhere near done. It's brown with black or metal stuff interwoven inside. Man I hate 36 year old cars
