My wife enjoys riding in my 66.. to a point. For ice cream runs 30 minutes or so, but then she gets uncomfortable due to no headrests. I’m torn as I like to look off the original low back seat, but understand the comfort, and more importantly, the safety that a headrest provides. I bought the car with the interior done with all new TMI bolstered cushions and deluxe pony covers.. love the look.

and yes, I realize that just Crow lap belts aren’t exactly the most secure in case of an accident..
I’ve also read about all the aftermarket or other seat options, but I like the look of the originals, and would rather not spend thousands on new seats.
I was wondering if anyone has added the TMI headrest kit and had an opinion on them for comfort and looks. I’d hate if they looked like an ill fitting add-on. I’ve not seen any in person or pictures of them actually in a mustang if anyone had any to share?
Thanks!!

There was an option for the dealers to add headrests to the 65-67 seats (that don't work in later year models). If your seats have the original frames (not sure if your seats just have TMI cushions and covers added over the old frames), you can get OE style headrest kits from NPD and others.

I installed a couple of sets on project cars I worked on a few years ago. Quality is high, standard installation was a snap, and they look like they were factory installed. Note that the project car in the foreground was a '67 with the Interior Decor Group option so a little finesse was required to clear the stainless steel trim around the clamshell seat backs. The HIghland Green '68 fastback in the background also has the TMI headrests. This is the only pic I could find that shows the headrests installed.

I ordered the headrests as part of their seat assembly.
I never thought about the comfort of a headrest, it is a headrest that I can rest my head on comfortably.

Thank you for the pictures!! I’m glad to hear that you were happy with them, tho I am happy with the TMI seat cushion and covers that I have, so I’m not surprised. A question, do they sit flush or even compressed into the top of the seat, or is there any gap? If they were too high, I don’t think that would look very good…
Im not sure the differences between the OEM and the TMI.. might call NPD to see what they think..
thank you!

I bought a set of the TMI upholstery and cushions that had been used for a demo and included the head rests. I haven’t installed them yet, but they look great.

No gap between the seat and the headrest.

These are the TMI headrest I installed in my 65. When the headrest is put all the way down there is no gap, and I like the fact that I can tilt the headrest as needed.

How does one go about installing the headrests into a seat that doesn't have them? Do you need to remove the seat back cover to install the headrests?

My seats were also redone with TMI covers, but I didn't think to add headrests at the time.
