OK. It runs now that the plug wires are set properly. It ran a bit hot but since it was timed it runs a little bit cooler than it did the first time we started it. But next time the vacuum advance will be hooked up.

The engine sounds strong. But the flames coming out the carb are troubling. It only happens when we are starting it. Obviously we can't drive around like this. Once it starts it runs great. We have to work on the idle a bit.

Any ideas on the flames?

I've got the same problem with mine. Most likely, you just have your timing too far advanced. I have yet to tune mine, but I would imagine it would solve the problem. You can check the color of your plugs to determine if your engine is running too lean (i.e. white plugs).
