Should I have bought it? It's a 68 1/2 fastback 428 CobraJet (not running), you name it and it needed it. the car looks like it hit a tree or poll years ago so someone removed the nose to repair it and decided to give up, they had also hacked off both rear quarters and welded on skins (poorly) and never painted the welds or did any body work. The car now looks like it should be scraped but because it's a 428CJ fastback it's still work something. The owner was asking $5000, I told him I wanted to think it over, the next day I called him and he said someone else had put a deposit on it. Do you think it was worth $5000?

Well, the engine MAY have been worth it alone. I believe I would have taken the engine out and scrapped or part out the rest. Just my.02

I think it really depends on if the car is essentially complete. CJ motor parts are expensive and if the car has it's orginal engine, tranny and rear then you may be on to something. If the drivetrain is there and you're willing to spend $8-10K on getting the body repaired properly then it may be worth it for you. I say $4000 is more fair.

Nope. IMHO, not worth it.

Yes, it had a very desirable engine, but that's it. The rest would have sucked your account dry. Keep looking...you'll come across something.

For me I would almost always rather purchase a good set of numbers with a body than buy an engine. Engines are much esaier to find than a car with good/attractive numbers. Well that is what has worked best for me over the last 30 yrs with these cars ;)

In the case you presented I would say pass on the car UNLESS the car's VIN checked out to be one of the 50 race cars or other interesring set.
