Best way to fill oil in an installed Top loader ?

4293 Views 24 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  Rufus68
Soon I will be filling up my 4sp Top Loader thru the fill plug on the side of the transmission case. The oil bottle has a spout but looks like there's little clearance in the tunnel to tip the bottle up high enough to squeeze the oil from bottle to fill hole. What the best practice here to minimize oil from dripping on the garage floor?

Grab a few feet of clear vinyl hose from the hardware store and drop it down from the engine compartment. Have a helper tip the bottle while you hold the hose in the fill hole. Don't forget to use GL-4 spec gear oil that is compatible with brass blocker rings.

Woodchuck is spot on. I've used this method for years. Usually you can warm the hose end and push the nozzle of the bottle of gear oil in the top of the hose. prop the bottle bottom side up, use a knife to slit the bottom of the bottle, and let her drain through the hose to the tranny. no mess, no fuss and if you give it time, no waste.
I saw gear oil in a plastic squeezable bag a couple of days ago. I think it was Valvoline but it was probably GL5.
Have used several methods over the years.

Fuel line on the bottle spout, with a piece of 3/8 steel tube bent at 135° stuck in the fill hole. Make the fuel line long enough so you can hold the bottle upright out from under the car - very similar to Woodchuck's suggestion, but a one man deal.

StaLube 1 gallon bottle with their pump and the 135° bent tube.

Best method was to fill it on the bench.

Regardless, make sure to use GL-4 spec gear lube and only GL-4, Not "GL4/GL5" multispec, GL-4. NAPA carries the StaLube brand, or you can get it on Amazon.

Another gear oil readily available (if they don't have their head up their butt) at the Nissan dealers is 999MP-MTF00P, 75W-85 GL-4 manual transmission fluid.
I've used Brad Penn GL4 - 2.25 quarts I believe. As Woodchuck says use a clear hose but long enough to tape it your antenna this way you don't need a helper. Get a small funnel that fits and slowly pour it in. Then after 2 quarts look to see if it spills out the fill hole. The tricky part is removing the hose underneath the car and not spilling. Because some fluid will stay in the hose as you fill you will need 3 quarts (but only a portion to push through the hose).
May be a little tough to find but it's out there. Brian

Is your interior installed? Seems like I filled it through the shifter hole
Ive used one of the little pumps like patrick linked to.

I guess I'm defective. Others mentioned getting a long tube and a helper.. Helpers are non existent.

Exactly how much fluid to fill a toploader?
Until it comes out the fill hole...generally about 2 to 2.5 quarts I think.

I just used a large stringe with a piece of tubing and did it under the car. Easy peasy.

You don't need a helper if you got tape and antenna - I never had one either.

My first choice too.

I've rebuilt a few of them and I cant tell you the exact volume of oil required but I believe its approximately 2 quarts. Regardless, you simply want to fill it at the filler plug (in the car) until oil begins to overflow out of the filler plug opening.
Several good ideas have been listed, but this is how I do mine:
Get the small clear hose and heat to expand. Slide it over the clean, dry nipple after you clip the tip off. Clip far enough down to allow decent flow. Add a mini hose clamp. Crawl under the car, insert the hose and squeeze it like a tube of toothpaste. Switch the nipple to the next bottle and repeat. You won't be able to empty the bottle, but you can pour the leftovers into a single bottle so that it's not wasted.
Sounds like some good Ideals, Thanks Guys
