where can i find what the 351W in my 68 coupe came out of? there must be some sort of id numbers somewhere...

Closest you will probably be able to get is checking the date code and part number above the starter. There might be a partial VIN on the rear of the block, but I'm not sure.

Are all 351W pretty much the same, then?

There should be a partial vin# on the driverside rear of the block between the bell housing and the head. My cars VIN # is 0F02M153XXX and the block reads 0F153XXX. Knowing what plant the car line was in should give you an idea. 0 for 1970, F for the dearborn plant, and 153XXX being the consecutive vin#.
