Brakes

I have a 66 inline 6 with drum brakes that i drive a few times a month and would love to enter some car shows. I am trying to decide on a quality front brake set up that wont break the bank; preferably under 1K. I already have the v8 spindles so I will convert to 5 lug while im at it. I will also eventually put some 15x7 MAGNUM 500 ALLOY WHEELS on the front so would like something to fit those too. I have looked at the Wilwood brakes and also a lot of people seem to prefer chockostang set ups. Any advice would be greatly appreciated since i am extremely new to this.

cant go wrong with what chockostang puts out. unless you are going road racing, you dont need to spend the money for the wilwood system. a good factory style system will do just fine.
Ditto the above. Wilwood and similar setups are for road racing or people who want bling. Your current drum brakes are adequate. The factory Ford disc brakes will be more than adequate. The Kelsey Hayes four-piston caliper disc brakes will be outstanding.

Pretty sure Dan is still on vacation. When he comes back, he will give you solid advice and sell you good hardware.
Thanks! If Im looking at it right it is only $45 difference between the two kits. Chockostang is $699 and the wilwood classic kit is $749.

Chock's kit also comes with great step-by-step instructions and pics, in case you might need them. Super responsive if you have questions too!
A well tuned and maintained drum setup is underrated. Unless you are set on discs (which are great, too), do you really need them? Just asking.
Also, with a Chockostang kit, everything will bolt right up to everything else on your car, to include the wheels. With a Wilwood kit???
+1 on the Chockostang kit.

In a quick look, I do not believe the kits are 100% the same. The Chockostang kit is a complete kit, it includes the splash shields, master cylinder and the proportioning valve. I like the Chockostang kit in that, if you ever need replacement parts, you can go to any store and say, yes, I have a 66 Mustang with stock disc brakes and get the correct parts (other than the master cylinder). Happy Chockostang customer here!

I agree, I towed a small boat all over the east coast with a 66 Sprint when I was in college, never had the slightest problem braking.

If all you do is drive to shows and cruise night, the conversion you contemplate is a huge waste of money. To go with five-bolt V8 wheels you will need of course the wheels, probably new tires for them because the wheels will be much wider than the ones you have now, you'll need a wheel alignment due to spindle replacement, and of course you'll have to replace the entire rear axle, all of which will be one long cha-ching.

On the other hand, you could recondition the entire brake system for less than 1/10 of the cost of all that, and you are good to go.

At most, I would consider the Scarebird disc brake. No need for alignment, new wheels, or rear axle swap, and it clocks in for just a few hundred bucks. And I wouldn't do that until after driving for a while on the stock brakes, carefully adjusted.

Well it's not a necessity to have disc, but I'm a 115 female and don't really like having to stand on the brakes to stop. I also do not like the looks of the original 4 lug tires I have on it now. I know that's how it came but I am personally not a fan. I assume there is no way to change from 4 to 5 lug without some sort of kit on the front and rear axels on the back?

You haven't said, but do you want power disc? I'm a fan of Chock's but the sensible upgrade(if you must) is the Scarebird option as proposed by 22GT. You can always lose the whitewalls and pop Styled Steel Wheel Covers on it for a sportier look. Maybe go up a size in tire width and Arning/Shelby Drop it for the cost of an alignment as well. Prest-O Change-O, a whole new look, better handling, easier braking effort. Excelsior!:smile2:
I'm a fan of CSRP's set up. I think it runs about $580.
I put chocks disks on my 64 1/2 without the power booster and there is a huge difference in stopping power.
I have the Wilwood setup in the front, they work very well :) Can't comment on the CSRP setup, but the Wilwood discs upfront combined with the SSBC discs in the rear put up with my abuse.

This is the kit I used:

It's definitely overkill for your application if you're just going put put around town. DEFINITELY ditch the drums though in favor of discs, regardless of your driving style. Modern cars (and drivers) stop much faster than our old mustangs, 4 wheel drums simply don't keep up.

Summit sells the Wilwood MUCH stuff cheaper than the Wilwood website, FYI. (Here's the same kit you linked!)

I'd recommend the power disc set up from CHOCK.
Thanks to everyone for the CHOCK recommendations. I ordered a kit from them this week, after a nice chat with Dan, and received the kit the next day! Now the fun begins.
