Well...after almost 10 months...and a whole bunch of tinkering, I finally got it all back together and got my 302 fired up today... the usual annoying problems, but one in particular I need some help with.

Using a 70 block, coupled to 90 bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate and T-5.....and I was told to use an early model starter for automatics, so I got a 66 starter for a C-4.

When I go to start it, It only engages about every 4th or 5th try...spins off otherwise. Any ideas on why it is not catching?

Is the whole 302 a 70?

If it is, every time you rev her up, that 90 flywheel's balance is going to shake you to death!!! (wrong balance)

I don't know about the starter prob....an auto starter doesn't sound right

I had the flywheel rebalanced to the 28oz from the original 70 flywheel, and that seems to work fine. Just the engagement is not working consistently.

I seem to remember someone saying "late-model" automatic starter. I have no idea if say a 1994 Mustang 5.0 Automatic starter is the same as a 1966 Automatic starter though. Possibly the late model has a longer throw?
