Build date and VIN number

I have a '66 Convertible that no longer has the door plate. I am trying to determine an approximate build date from the VIN number. The last six digits of the VIN are 115109 - I believe this number was handed out sequentially when the car was built. I am looking for other '66 Mustangs that have a similar range VIN that still have the door plate containing the Build date. Any body have a number close to 115109??

I'm not sure where on your year, but there are hidden VIN's.

I do have the whole VIN, it's 6R08C115109 - these hidden codes you speak of, are there build dates, or DSO, etc... info also??
you can look at the variuos date stamps on the body panels around the car and that should tell you within a month of those stamps.

Yes, I meant to include the fender flanges' date stamps under the hood edges, if original. Inside the trunk gutter too.

The vin number reflects the date the order was recieved, not the date it was built.
I thought the VIN was the sequential number at the plant. It doesn't need to be the number of Mustangs built. Am I wrong?

Its the sequential number of the order for that plant. Cars were not built in sequential order .... for example we know of a group of 68's that were built in order, their VIN's varried by over 4,000 numbers (group represented approx 24 cars in order)

The date used for the door tag would vary depending on where your car was assemblied (second digit in the VIN)

From other cars with similar numbers

San Jose- Sept 3 or 4
Dearborn- Aug 18 or 19
NJ - Aug 27 or 28

Best guess based on know cars

These dates were assigned at the date the order was recieved by a certain plant. They often do not represent the finish date of the car

Hope this helps

You can call ford motor company customer service and ask for a history report on your car. I did this on my 68 coupe that was missing the door tag. I gave them the VIN and they sent a free report with the car specs, options, and build date of the car. This report will give you the information needed to have a door plate re-created. It took about 3 weeks to get the report after I called them.

Sorry but a History 99 report from Ford will not work for this person. Fords reords do not go back to 64-66. Also from examples w've seen their report does not always give the same projected build date as listed on the original door tag.

Ray, I am in a similar position, I have no build plate only the Vin Tag, my Vin is ORO5M130747 cam you advise the possible;
production date
production date code
GAWR (Rear)

I am trying to get a Data Plate from Mustangs unlimited and I cannot find these details anywhere.
look at Klaus mustang site and find 66 mustangs with the R plant code and a b 4 and after unit number and look at their build dates. 66 mustangs were usually built within 3 months of the body date codes.

Since you have a 1970, skip MU and go directly to Kevin Marti. He has the build data, and you will get an accurate replacement tag with no guesswork.

Using the Numbers book, you can get within a day or two of the original scheduled build.
Jim Smart's book, In Search of Mustangs. Had that problem with a 65 Dearborn car. A one time MCA judge had the book and he found a Dearborn vin that was about 20 numbers away from mine, so picked that date. Right or wrong, it was reasonable, in viewing some dates on metal panels
Wow, a 10 year old post, back from the dead....
Anyone know the manufacture date? Thanks in advance. 67 mustang 7T03C284593
