I need to replace the tailshaft bushing in the C4 automatic of my 1965. I keep hearing conflicting stories. Some say I need to remove the tail housing and some say it can be done by just removing the rear seal only. Can anyone give me an accurate recommendation? Any special tools needed? Thanks.

There is a special tool that allows you to do it without removing the tail housing. The only companies I know of that make them are Snapon and OTC. Without the tool, you must remove the tail housing.

Remove the tail shaft, far easier for the home mechanic. Done it, does not take all that long. Biggest problem in trying to change it with the tail shaft on is the output shaft is there, and the amount of room you have to work in is the thickness of the side of the yoke.
