How many speeds does the C4 have? I just read in the search that there are OD kits but sound way too expensive. Is there any other recommended auto trannies that will bolt right up to the backend of a 302 that has more gears?

A Gear Vendors overdrive will turn a C4 into a six speed if you want, but is somewhat pricey, I think it is around $2500. An AOD overdrive will bolt to the block same as a C4 but with some mods to the rest of the installation. I put an AOD in my 347 67 FB

By the way a C4 is a 3 speed, AOD is 4 speed.

The C4 is considered a very reliable unit, although with only 3 gears. The AOD, with 4 speeds, will be a bit of a hassle to install (much is written on this elsewhere), but the OD gear is well worthwhile. If your C4 is in need of repair, it would be a good time to find a decent AOD to swap in. Details of the swap at http://www.themustangshop.com/c4toaod.cfm

If one was to go with an AOD, is there a shifter plate indicator that would fit a Mustang automatic console?
