I may have the chance to get a local Fairlane (ZH) cheap.
It has a 302 (cleveland ?, is there such a thing ? ) and a 9" diff.
Could it have a C6 as well? How can I tell externally.
Don't want to tip the guy off.

Charles,

I always thought the C4 and C6 were both one piece units, and the FMX was the only one with the removable BellHousing. I am inclined to believe you however, but that leaves one question: what is the difference in the C4 and the FMX?

Thanks

The FMX has a cast iron body and is heavier than he*l, C4 is all aluminum as is the one piece C6.FMX's used behind the 351 engines, not the 302 from what I have seen. The C6 was generall used for the smallblocks as well behind the 351 engines. There are two versions of C4-stepped case and flared case-usually seen behind heavier applications-big cars and trucks. As well there are different bellhousing bolt patterns for 64 C4 and different style castings around the front pump bolts which hold bell on C4 to body.

Just a minor correction....The C-4 was used behind most small blocks. The C-6 is used in the "heavy duty" applications, as MOST c-6's have big block bellhousings. there are smallblcok bellhousing c-6's however(I have one).

Typically, the C-4 in STOCK form is not near as strong as a C-6...but the C-6 is a Horsepower HOG as it sucks away alot more HP than the C-4.

JMHO....

the main difference is that the c-4 is best used as a boat anchor
